Hello everyone, welcome back to his pharmacology difficult podcast. And today we are going to cover one topic in 5-minute pharmacology. As we approach the International Yoga Day, I want to explore a very important question. Can yoga be considered as medicine? And the answer is both yes and no. First of all, let's clear our concepts. Let's define what we mean by medicine. In modern healthcare, medicine is considered effective treatment that improves the health outcomes. The stronger and more consistent the evidence, the more confidently we can recommend a particular medicine. And now the question is: does yoga fit in all the scenario? Well, researchers over the past few decades have suggested that yoga can provide measurable benefits for over several health conditions. Studies have shown a lot of improvements in the stress levels, anxiety, sleep quality, chronic lower back pain, flexibility, balance, improvement in the blood pressure states, and overall well-being. One of the reasons yoga is so effective that it combines multiple beneficial elements. It includes physical activity, controlled breathing, and mindfulness, relaxation and body awareness. And together these practices influence both the body and the mind. Now, from a physiological perspective, let's talk about it. How does yoga help? Yoga may help to reduce the activity of the body's stress response system, which can lead to lower levels of stress hormones like cortisol and all these conditions they promote a calmer state through the activation of parasympathetic nervous system, and that is known as the rest and the digest system. But we need to be very very careful, yoga is not a cure at all. Social media may claim anything that yoga has to be in a proven cure of hypertension, diabetes, etc. But can yoga help people with these conditions? Absolutely, yes. When the yoga and the scientific medicine they coexist together, both can prove like a bliss, a blessing. Yoga improves the quality of life, reduces stress, enhances mobility, supports the overall health, and it complements the evidence-based medicine, but it does never replace that evidence-based medicine, the scientific medicine that we talk about, as a definition. As a pharmacologist, a yoga is a very powerful add on therapy, adjunct therapy. It can work alongside medicines and other treatments and improve and fasten the health outcomes. The most scientific approach is not to choose between the yoga and the medicine, it is to understand where each particular thing has a role. Where will the medicines play a role and how will yoga help out there? Medicine can save lives, yoga can improve lives, and both together can simply work wonders. And thanks everybody for listening to 5 Minute Pharmacology. Once again, I'm back with the topic Yoga is medicine. I hope I cleared all your myths and doubts. And please share this episode for people who believe that non pharmacological yoga cannot coexist with the pharmacological treatment. So that they also clear the doubts and myths. Till the next time, stay curious, stay healthy, stay informed. Thank you. Take care. Bye.
